Roaring Tiger
Roaring Tiger

This shot of a Siberian Tiger was taken by my son, James, at age 16.

There’s an amusing story, to go with this image...

On our visit to the park, I was determined not to just get the usual snapshots of the tigers. I wanted to show some of their character. As we walked through the entrance we could already hear the lions and tigers. I visualised the shots I wanted, one being a tiger, mouth open showing that big mouth and teeth!

When we arrived at the tiger enclosure, I noticed a large pool and the surface was covered in duckweed…very green. I mentioned to my son that I would love a shot of a tiger swimming in the water.

I spent ages watching the tigers, waiting for the shots I wanted. My wife, Marion and son, James had decided to rest in the picnic area nearby. I’d got a couple of nice shots, but neither of the two shots mentioned. I decided to return to my family, and while I chatted to Marion, James asked to have a go with my camera. Off he went to the tiger enclosure, returning just 5 minutes later to show me the shot posted here!!!

Throughout the day I revisited the tigers many times, but could never repeat the shot taken by James, and the tigers never went near the water.

Before we left, James went back to see the tigers while I photographed an owl. I made my way over to my son and he told me he had seen the tiger swimming in the pool! I looked closely at the tiger walking away, with duckweed on his back!

I hope I’ll get better luck next time! I must add he has had a smug look on his face ever since!!!
